Recent analysis by On Point Loyalty has confirmed that Delta Air Lines' SkyMiles program remains the most valuable airline loyalty scheme globally in 2026, with an estimated worth of $31.7 billion. The report, which assessed over 170 airline loyalty schemes worldwide, underscores the increasingly pivotal role these programs play in the airline industry’s financial health. US carriers continue to dominate, with American Airlines' AAdvantage valued at $26.7 billion and United Airlines' MileagePlus at $25.3 billion, driven largely by co-branded credit card partnerships spanning the American market.

The study highlights significant growth in international programs. IAG Avios, used by airlines under the International Airlines Group, surged 45% to $10.3 billion, while Qantas Frequent Flyer increased 63% to $7.0 billion. The average valuation of the top 100 programs now stands at $2.4 billion, a rise from 2023, revealing how airlines are increasingly leveraging their loyalty assets as strategic, revenue-generating tools. The valuation methodology considers multiple factors, including passenger activity, macroeconomic conditions, and potential equity sales or listings, emphasizing the strategic importance of these programs in airline resilience and profitability amid industry challenges.

Historical Context and Industry Impact

The origins of airline loyalty programs date back to 1981 with American Airlines’ AAdvantage, followed by United's MileagePlus and Delta's SkyMiles launched simultaneously. The co-branded credit card agreements, initiated in 1987, vastly expanded the earning potential for passengers and monetized miles as an asset for airlines. Bank partnerships now form a significant revenue stream, with banks purchasing miles from airlines and allocating them to cardholders, effectively creating a multi-billion-dollar reward currency economy. Experts believe that loyalty programs have become critical to airline financial strategies, helping airlines weather downturns and crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Proper management, transparent reporting, and strategic ownership are seen as essential to unlocking their full financial potential.
