Dense fog causes severe restrictions on flight operations at Dortmund Airport

Last Sunday, Dortmund Airport experienced severe disruptions caused by dense fog, leading to the near shutdown of air traffic at the regional hub. The visibility dropped far below the safety thresholds required for aircraft operations, compelling air traffic control to make critical decisions to ensure safety.

According to official sources, a total of 13 flights were directly impacted, with most arriving aircraft diverted to alternative airports such as Cologne/Bonn. Several flights were canceled altogether as delays could not be safely managed given the weather conditions. Dortmund Airport is equipped with a Category II Instrument Landing System (ILS) on runway 24, allowing landings down to a decision height of 100 feet and visibility of about 300 meters. However, the fog partially decreased visibility below these levels, preventing safe landings for many aircraft. It was only late in the afternoon that atmospheric conditions eased temporarily, permitting a plane from Palma de Mallorca to land.

Technical and Economic Impacts

The fog's impact was intensified by Dortmund's geographical location on the Ardey Hills, which favors quick formation of dense fog due to moist air stagnation. The disruptions have significant economic implications, especially for carriers like Wizz Air and Ryanair, which incur high costs managing diversions and assisting stranded passengers.

"The dense fog significantly hampers the airport's ability to operate safely," said an airport spokesperson. "Our Category II ILS can only support landings under specific visibility conditions, and when these are not met, services are temporarily halted."

The airport's emergency services remained on high alert throughout the day, and logistical efforts included organizing bus shuttles to transport passengers from diverted airports back to the Ruhr region. Experts advise travelers to monitor flight status updates frequently, as normal operations are unlikely to resume until weather conditions improve sufficiently.

In summary, the ongoing fog has emphasized the limitations of Dortmund Airport's safety systems and the importance of weather conditions in regional aviation operations. Continued atmospheric uncertainties mean that full resumption of standard flight schedules may be delayed until visibility levels improve significantly.
