DHL Group has expanded its collaboration with IAG Cargo to increase the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Heathrow Airport, London. This five-year extension aims to deploy approximately 240 million litres of SAF, reducing lifecycle emissions associated with DHL Express shipments transported on British Airways flights.
The partnership, which builds upon a 2025 renewal, underscores efforts within the industry to lower greenhouse gas emissions in air freight logistics. Travis Cobb, EVP of global network operations at DHL Express, stated, "This agreement shows what is possible when two committed SAF users pool their efforts," highlighting the initiative's potential for impactful emissions reductions.
The SAF utilized is certified by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) and produced from sustainable sources such as used cooking oil. DHL estimates the initiative will cut around 640,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions during the contract period. A further broader framework with DHL Global Forwarding (DGF) and IAG Cargo is also supporting diversified access to sustainable fuels, potentially unlocking more than one million tonnes of greenhouse gas reductions on a lifecycle basis.
Camilo Garcia Cervera, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at IAG Cargo, emphasized the importance of the partnership: "It’s great to see our partnership continue to grow as we work together to deliver more sustainable air freight solutions while keeping global trade moving." The agreement aligns with DHL’s goal of increasing the share of sustainable aviation fuel in air transport to 30% by 2030, signaling a significant step toward more environmentally responsible logistics practices.
