Diamond Aircraft has marked a key milestone with the delivery of the first European-built DA20i Katana, after resuming production earlier this year. The aircraft was handed over during a ceremony at Diamond’s headquarters in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, on November 28, 2025, to Aviation Academy Austria, a leading flight training organization. This event signals a strategic move to meet the increasing demand for modern training aircraft across Europe.

The DA20i Katana, a trusted two-seat trainer, is being reintroduced into the European market following a decade-long break in local production. While its Canadian counterpart, the DA20-C1, has been continually produced for North American customers, Europe’s renewed interest is driven by flight schools and private owners seeking efficient and technologically advanced trainers. The newly assembled aircraft features an upgraded Rotax 912 iSc3 Sport engine, replacing the earlier Continental engine, to improve fuel efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Technological Upgrades

Enhanced avionics, including the Garmin G500 TXi glass flight deck with touchscreen controls, are among the notable updates. These technological improvements align with the industry’s shift toward modern cockpit systems, preparing students for current and future operational environments. Oliver Karall, CEO of Aviation Academy Austria, expressed enthusiasm about integrating the new aircraft into their fleet to offer superior training, emphasizing its proven design and technological advances.

Strategic Industry Move

The relaunch of the DA20i in Europe is part of Diamond Aircraft’s broader strategic initiative to cater to the expanding market for economical, environmentally friendly training solutions. The first unit was delivered to AAA, with a second aircraft scheduled for early 2026, indicating robust market interest. Industry experts see this move as a positive step toward modernizing pilot training programs in Europe, supporting the development of qualified aviation professionals.

The successful European return of the DA20i Katana underscores the evolving needs of the industry, where sustainability, advanced technology, and cost efficiency drive procurement decisions. Diamond Aircraft’s reinvigoration of its European production line aims to position the company as a leading supplier of innovative flight training aircraft, ensuring its relevance in a rapidly changing aviation landscape.
