East Midlands Airport has welcomed its sixth new cargo airline within a six-month period, further establishing itself as a key logistics hub in the UK. The latest airline, SF Express, initiated operations with four weekly flights from China, connecting the airport to Ezhou Huahu International Airport, a major cargo center developed as China’s first dedicated cargo airport.
This influx of new cargo operators is part of East Midlands Airport's long-term strategic growth plan for the cargo sector, supported by its high-profile location, round-the-clock operations, and cargo expertise. Other airlines, including Etihad Cargo, Atlas Air, Ethiopian Cargo, Saudia Cargo, and Central Airlines, have also begun regular flights, strengthening the UK's air cargo network with Asia and the Middle East.
Strategic Global Connections
The new route exemplifies the strategic linkages between China and the UK, with airports in each country serving three major cities. The inaugural SF Express flight utilized a chartered aircraft from One Air, already operating between the two countries. The chairman of the China Chamber of Commerce in the UK, Fang Wenjian, highlighted the importance of this route for trade facilitation and global supply chain resilience.
“The launch of SF Express flights between Ezhou and East Midlands will further facilitate trade, support businesses on both sides, and contribute to a more resilient global supply chain,” said Fang Wenjian.
East Midlands Airport’s commercial director, Adam Andrews, emphasized its growing reputation in the global cargo community and expressed optimism about future growth. The airport’s strategic position and dedicated freighter operations are making it an increasingly attractive hub for logistics companies worldwide.
