September 26, 2026 — EasyJet cabin crew based in Portugal have announced plans for strike action across two periods later this year, potentially disrupting hundreds of flights between the UK and Portugal. The industrial action, stemming from an ongoing dispute over pay and working conditions, is scheduled for October 2-6 and December 19-23.
Operations at Lisbon, Porto, and Faro airports are expected to be significantly impacted. The Portuguese cabin crew union, SNPVAC, estimates approximately 500 flights could be cancelled during the October strike period alone.
The core of the dispute involves complaints from cabin crew regarding alleged frequent changes to duty rosters, staffing levels, and pay issues. SNPVAC reports that the strike action received unanimous support from 188 easyJet employees who attended an emergency meeting to address the grievances.
EasyJet has expressed disappointment over the planned strikes, stating a willingness to continue constructive dialogue. An easyJet spokesperson commented, "We are extremely disappointed that SNPVAC is planning strike actions despite our willingness to continue a constructive dialogue." The airline indicated it had initiated a conciliation process through DGERT mediation to reach an agreement that addresses employee requests while maintaining the sustainability of its Portuguese operations.
The spokesperson added, "The current union demands are unworkable especially given that our crew are already paid significantly above the Portuguese national average."
EasyJet has confirmed that some flights have already been cancelled in anticipation of the industrial action. Specifically, two return flights and one outbound flight from Southend Airport have been cancelled. London Stansted Airport flights have not yet been affected.
The airline stressed that further cancellations are possible as it manages the potential impact. It aims to minimize disruption for customers by actioning some cancellations in advance, allowing passengers to re-arrange travel plans.
The October walkout coincides with Portugal's Republic Day weekend, while the December strike is slated for the busy days leading up to Christmas. These timings raise concerns about significant disruption for holidaymakers during peak travel periods.
Passengers scheduled to travel to or from Portugal during these dates are advised to closely monitor communications from easyJet for the latest updates regarding their flights.
