Ethiopian Airlines has announced an ambitious long-term expansion plan aiming for 67 million passengers annually by 2035. The initiative focuses on upgrading airport infrastructure, extending its regional and domestic network, and acquiring modern, fuel-efficient aircraft to support increased demand. These developments are part of Ethiopia's broader strategy to position its national carrier as the leading airline on the African continent and to boost economic growth through enhanced connectivity.
Unveiled at the 5th Annual General Assembly of the African Association of Aviation Training Organizations, the strategy emphasizes infrastructure investments, including expanding airport terminals and cargo facilities. Ethiopian Airlines also plans to increase its fleet and establish new routes to underserved airports, supporting the country's goal of becoming Africa’s central hub for international air traffic.
The airline is investing in aviation training programs to develop a skilled workforce capable of managing its expanding network, which will benefit both Ethiopian Airlines and the larger African aviation sector. This growth is expected to stimulate jobs and support economic development in Ethiopia, while also fostering increased tourism and trade across Africa.
Despite challenges such as regional stability and global economic conditions, Ethiopian Airlines’ resilient fleet of over 120 aircraft positions it well to meet its 2035 passenger goals. The airline’s commitment to quality and infrastructure expansion aims to secure its status as Africa’s dominant carrier and a key player in connecting the continent with the world.
