Etihad Airways is expanding its network to include six new destinations within Africa, driven by increasing demand for travel and trade ties with the continent. These new routes connect Abu Dhabi to Accra in Ghana, Asmara in Eritrea, Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lagos in Nigeria, and a triangular route involving Harare in Zimbabwe and Lubumbashi in the DRC. The first flights are scheduled to commence between November 2026 and March 2027, with initial frequencies ranging from three to daily flights.
This strategic expansion aims to serve underserved markets and reinforce economic links, particularly in sectors like manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and infrastructure. The move complements recent route launches to China, boosting the airline’s total new destinations launched within a single week to eleven. The airline’s long-term vision, known as Journey 2030, involves increasing its fleet and destination network while positioning Abu Dhabi as a major international hub for both passengers and cargo.
By focusing on high-potential markets such as these African cities, Etihad Airways hopes to facilitate regional trade, tourism, and economic development. The airline plans to leverage its widebody fleet and the Airbus A321LR to optimize market demand, creating more seamless travel options for passengers connecting through Abu Dhabi to broader markets in Asia and beyond. These efforts demonstrate the airline's commitment to strategic growth and regional integration in the global aviation industry.
