European regulators have reaffirmed that airlines are obliged to compensate passengers for flights canceled due to rising jet fuel prices. According to the EU transport commissioner, fuel shortages do not qualify as extraordinary circumstances, meaning carriers must provide reimbursements regardless of the cause of cancellation. In the UK, regulators have slightly eased penalties for flight cancellations related to fuel issues, though the legal obligation remains intact.

Major European airlines like Lufthansa and Aer Lingus have canceled some summer flights amid soaring fuel costs, while Ryanair announced it would keep its schedule intact thanks to pre-hedged fuel contracts. Industry leaders and CEOs, such as Tony Fernandes of AirAsia, have described the current fuel crisis as worse than the COVID-19 pandemic, with fuel prices nearly tripling following geopolitical tensions over Iran.

The crisis is linked to the recent conflict involving Iran, the US, and Israel, which has resulted in the effective closure of key oil routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global supplies. Governments and airlines are working on measures to ensure minimal disruption, with some airlines expanding their aircraft orders to prepare for future demand. Although fuel stocks in the UK are reported to be sufficient, the industry remains vulnerable to supply chain shocks and price volatility, which could lead to further flight disruptions and higher fares for passengers.
