European Airline Industry Warns Fuel Price Increase Due to Iran War Will Lead to Higher Fares

European airlines have issued warnings that the recent surge in fuel prices, driven by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, will likely lead to increased airfares for passengers. Industry executives, including Kenton Jarvis of EasyJet and representatives from Lufthansa and Air France-KLM, explained that although some airlines have hedged fuel costs, the unwinding of these hedges and rising crude oil prices are making further cost increases inevitable. They urged travelers to book early to mitigate higher fares.

In response to geopolitical disruptions, long-haul carriers are expanding operations to Asia to compensate for reduced Gulf hub activity caused by the conflict following the US-Israeli attack on Iran. Lufthansa announced adding 40 flights to Asia, while Air France-KLM is boosting capacity to regions with strong demand. The airlines aim to diversify routes to avoid congested or disrupted Middle Eastern airspace, including new direct flights to Melbourne via Kuala Lumpur.

Industry calls for regulatory changes

At the same time, airline trade groups are lobbying the European Union to postpone mandates on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), particularly the eSAF component, citing the current unavailability of synthetic fuels and concerns over balanced industry competitiveness. They argue that green taxes and regulation are placing EU carriers at a disadvantage compared to non-EU competitors that face fewer obligations.

"We are calling for the eSAF mandate to be postponed until eSAF is actually available," said industry representatives.

Environmental organizations, however, criticized these calls, warning they could undermine the transition to cleaner fuels. The situation highlights the broader challenges faced by European carriers as they navigate geopolitical instability, rising fuel costs, and environmental commitments, all while trying to maintain market share and route diversity in a competitive global aviation landscape.
