European Union funding plans are underway to support the development of hybrid-electric ground demonstrators for narrowbody aircraft, as part of the EU's Clean Aviation initiative. The proposed projects, to be announced in the upcoming fourth call for proposals, involve up to three engine manufacturers sharing €60 million towards technology demonstrations targeted for service entry around 2035. These efforts form part of a larger €824 million research program, which includes private-sector contributions, aiming to advance next-generation, sustainable aircraft propulsion systems.

The funded projects will focus on demonstrating hybrid-electric sub-systems integrated into existing engine architectures, with a goal of achieving at least a 5% reduction in fuel burn and CO2 emissions at the aircraft level. The initiatives involve different engine types, including ducted and unducted variants, with potential involvement from manufacturers such as Safran, Rolls-Royce, and MTU Aero Engines. These projects will support the validation of new powertrain configurations, lightweight fuselage components, and hydrogen fuel systems, pushing forward the decarbonization of aviation technology.

Future Flight Tests and Project Timelines

Flight testing of regional aircraft demonstrators, including ATR-based platforms, is expected to start in the late 2020s. The configurations are anticipated to be finalized by 2026, with a focus on demonstrating hybrid-electric capabilities and hydrogen-powered propulsion. The program aims to catalyze commercial adoption of these innovative propulsion systems and accelerate the transition toward more sustainable air travel, with funding decisions scheduled for early 2026 and project winners announced in the fall.
