Evio Inc., a Montreal-based aerospace startup backed by Boeing and Pratt & Whitney Canada, has introduced the EVIO 810, a novel hybrid electric regional airliner. This aircraft aims to address the significant fleet reduction in the regional airline sector over the past five years, which has led to the retirement of thousands of aircraft and impaired regional connectivity.

The EVIO 810 features a unique "strong hybrid" configuration, utilizing batteries for primary power during takeoff and landing, while employing four Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6E turboprops as range extenders during cruise. This design promises lower emissions, reduced noise, and potentially lower maintenance costs, making it an attractive solution for the industry’s short-haul segment.

The aircraft accommodates 76 to 88 passengers and targets a mission range of under 500 nautical miles. It is designed to offer a mainline passenger experience with a wider fuselage, competing directly with aging Embraer E-Jet and CRJ fleets, while providing lower seat-mile costs. The company expects to bring the aircraft into service by the early 2030s.

Supported by experienced aerospace leaders such as Rob Dewar, Frank Cappuccio, and Al Meinzinger, and receiving technical backing from Boeing and Pratt & Whitney, Evio plans to develop variants for defense and cargo operations. The aircraft’s onboard power can serve military or remote applications, including directed-energy systems and logistics.

Facing an industry where over 2,650 regional aircraft have been scrapped due to operating costs, Evio’s innovative approach aims to meet the forecasted demand for 7,500 new regional aircraft over the next two decades. By enabling more sustainable, affordable regional flights, the EVIO 810 could significantly influence the future of short-haul aviation.
