Mozambique's domestic aviation sector is set for a significant change after the Mozambique Civil Aviation Regulatory Authority (IACM) issued a scheduled services license to Solenta Aviation Mozambique, operating under the Fastjet Mozambique brand. This approval, granted on December 17, comes after a prolonged regulatory process, effectively opening the market to new competition on domestic routes.
The government’s decision is part of a broader effort to liberalize the air transport industry by implementing a new decree that enhances oversight and policy control, including fare regulation. Fastjet Mozambique plans to launch services with two Embraer E145 aircraft, offering an alternative to the longstanding dominance of the troubled national carrier, LAM.
Market Competition and Future Outlook
This marks a second attempt by the Fastjet group to establish operations in Mozambique, after an earlier suspension in 2019 due to market overcapacity and cyclone damage. The airline aims to fill the gap in reliability, flight frequency, and affordability, which could lead to better service standards for passengers.
"The issuance of this license paves the way for increased competition and enhanced connectivity within Mozambique," said a government aviation official. "We expect this to benefit consumers through more affordable and reliable flight options."
The entry of Fastjet Mozambique is seen as a milestone that could stimulate further investment in the industry and improve overall service levels. Industry experts believe this development will foster a more dynamic and competitive environment, ultimately supporting economic growth and regional integration.
