FedEx and Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) have jointly announced the development of a fully automated air cargo hub at NMIA, marking a significant upgrade in India’s logistics infrastructure. The 300,000 square foot facility is designed to act as a regional logistics hub, supporting high-capacity freight handling and connecting India with key international markets including Southeast Asia, West Asia, Europe, and North America.
This partnership, involving Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. (AAHL), aims to leverage NMIA’s multimodal transport network to enhance export and import capabilities across Western India. The hub will feature advanced automation, including sorting, scanning, and screening systems, with dedicated aircraft parking bays to improve efficiency and transit times. Once fully operational, the facility is projected to generate over 6,000 jobs across various sectors such as logistics, warehousing, and transportation.
Strategic Impact and Future Capacity
Initial handling capacity is expected to start at approximately 0.5 million metric tonnes per year, with plans to scale to 3.25 million metric tonnes as development progresses. This expansion aligns with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s vision to become a leading global air freight gateway. Industry experts anticipate that the new cargo hub will bolster exports, reduce logistics costs, and improve the reliability of time-sensitive shipments, particularly for electronics, pharmaceuticals, and engineering goods.
Officials from FedEx and NMIA expect the facility to strengthen India’s trade competitiveness by integrating global logistics networks more seamlessly into the country’s primary trade corridor. The project emphasizes technological innovation and infrastructure development to meet the growing demand for fast, reliable air cargo services.
