Fiji Airports recently hosted the Pacific region's first ICAO–ACI Annex 14 Regional Workshop at its Aviation Academy in Nadi. The week-long event aimed to bolster regional aviation safety by providing technical training on ICAO Annex 14 standards for aerodrome design and operations, bringing together representatives from Fiji, Kiribati, Vanuatu, and Tuvalu.
The workshop underscored Fiji Airports’ commitment to developing the Blue Pacific’s aviation capacity, emphasizing the importance of consistent safety standards across island nations. ICAO's standards focus on crucial areas such as airport safety inspections, daily operations, audits, and emergency preparedness—all vital for regional resilience and collaboration.
Kyal Barter, ICAO’s Pacific liaison officer, highlighted the significance of regional cooperation to ensure safe and sustainable aviation systems for small island developing states. Fiji Airports Chief Executive Mesake Nawari reaffirmed the Academy’s role as a regional hub, stating that such training initiatives support the development of safer, more efficient airports throughout the Pacific.
Participants expressed their appreciation for the knowledge gained, recognizing its potential to enhance safety audits and operational practices in their respective countries. Overall, the workshop marks a key step towards strengthening Pacific aviation safety and fostering regional partnerships for an interconnected future.
