First week of Iran ceasefire sees partial recovery in Europe-Middle East flights, still below 2025 levels

In the week following the initiation of the Iran ceasefire, from 8 to 14 April 2026, aviation activity between Europe and the Middle East experienced a modest recovery, increasing by 13% compared to the previous week, according to data from EUROCONTROL. Despite this improvement, flights on Europe-Middle East routes remained 51.7% lower than during the same week in 2025, reflecting the ongoing impact of geopolitical tensions on international air travel. The overall European flight movements showed signs of resilience earlier in 2026 with year-on-year growth, but the recent decline in Middle East-bound flights has tempered this trend.

While airlines in Europe have seen some gains in Asia-bound routes, these gains have not been sufficient to offset the steep drop in Middle East traffic. The trend suggests that European long-haul carriers may be benefitting from the decline of Gulf carriers in the region. Nonetheless, the geopolitical conflict and the subsequent economic uncertainty have led the IMF to revise its global economic outlook downward, with Europe's GDP outlook particularly affected, potentially influencing future aviation demand.

This development underscores the ongoing disruptions caused by regional conflicts, highlighting the fragility of recovery in international aviation markets. Industry stakeholders are closely monitoring how the ceasefire impacts traffic levels and economic forecasts in the coming months.
