Garuda Indonesia is in the process of finalising a significant aircraft purchase agreement with Boeing, potentially involving 50 new aircraft. The airline is focused on overhauling its fleet to meet future demand, with efforts supported by recent trade deals between the United States and Asian nations, which included commitments for new aircraft from Boeing.

However, the airline faces notable challenges, including long lead times for aircraft deliveries, with current orders sold out into the 2030s. This situation compels Garuda to plan carefully for fleet renewal and expansion, especially given the airline's recent financial struggles.

Financial and Operational Obstacles

Recently, Garuda Indonesia received a $1.4 billion capital injection from Danone Indonesia, short of the initially expected $1.8 billion. This shortfall has caused some instability within the company's financial position, impacting fleet renewal plans. The capital was intended to support fleet updates across the airline's divisions, including Citilink.

Despite optimistic projections for growth, including plans to expand the fleet to over 150 aircraft, Garuda must navigate supply chain constraints and previous financial restructuring issues that have resulted in the loss of some aircraft due to insufficient funds to pay debts.

Overall, the airline remains committed to its strategic growth and fleet renewal, though it must manage risks associated with supply delays and financial health to realize these goals amidst an uncertain outlook.
