General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. announced the official name of its latest uncrewed combat aircraft as the 'Dark Merlin.' The YFQ-42A, developed for the U.S. Air Force, is scheduled to conduct its first flight in 2025. The aircraft aims to transition from a prototype (Y) to a production model, reflecting its anticipated operational role.

The aircraft is part of a program involving two collaborative combat aircraft (CCA), including the YFQ-44A by Anduril. This initiative aims to create highly capable uncrewed fighters to augment existing forces. The name 'Dark Merlin' was selected due to the falcon subspecies' fierce hunting nature, symbolizing speed and agility.

David Alexander, President of GA-ASI, stated, "Dark merlins are hunting machines, built for speed and aerodynamics. They harass other falcons for fun, and they eat what they kill. The name sums up our new uncrewed fighter perfectly."

The U.S. Air Force designates prototypes with a 'Y,' fighters with an 'F,' and uncrewed systems with a 'Q.' The expectation is that the aircraft will shed the Y-prefix when entering operational status, similar to how the F-16 program evolved from YF-16 to F-16. This development underscores the shifting landscape of modern air combat, with uncrewed aircraft capable of executing complex missions traditionally performed by manned fighters.

The project highlights the U.S. military’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge unmanned systems into its arsenal, aiming to enhance speed, agility, and lethality in future conflicts.
