Georgia's Georgian Airways is confronting financial challenges due to a significant rise in jet fuel prices. The airline has begun reducing its flight schedule, with warnings that it might face bankruptcy if conditions do not improve.

Victoria Klimicheva, the airline’s head of public relations, stated that a round-trip flight to Paris requires approximately 26 tonnes of fuel, costing around USD50,000. This translates to about USD500 per 100 passengers just for kerosene, severely impacting the airline's profitability. She highlighted that their previous round-trip fare ranged from €300 to €350, which is now insufficient to cover even the basic fuel costs on some routes.

Context of Rising Fuel Prices

The surge in jet fuel prices is linked to ongoing conflicts involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which have disrupted production and supply chains across West Asia and surrounding regions. These disruptions have directly affected airlines around the world, including Georgian Airways, leading to operational cutbacks and financial strain.

"Take a Paris round-trip: We need around 26 tonnes of fuel – about USD50,000 (approx. RM198,000). Across 100 passengers, that is USD500 (approx. RM2,013) per person just for kerosene," said Victoria Klimicheva.

As fuel costs continue to escalate, Georgian Airways faces an uncertain future if it cannot adjust its operations or secure additional financial support. The airline's situation exemplifies how geopolitical tensions and regional conflicts can have widespread repercussions on commercial aviation and regional connectivity.
