The global aviation industry is experiencing a significant downturn due to rising fuel costs and geopolitical conflicts, notably the Iran War. Since March, airlines worldwide have canceled thousands of flights, with capacities reduced by millions of seats, leading to financial distress for many carriers across Europe, India, the Middle East, and North America.
Major airlines such as Lufthansa, Air Canada, KLM, and several regional carriers have announced substantial flight reductions and capacity cuts, reflecting the severity of the crisis. Governments are intervening with aid packages, including India’s ₹5,000 crore emergency credit line and various subsidies worldwide, aiming to prevent airline collapses.
In response, airlines are implementing austerity measures including wage freezes, staff reductions, and route rationalizations. Carriers like Air India and SpiceJet in India face crippling losses, with the industry collectively preparing for a prolonged period of survival-focused adjustments. Despite potential easing if geopolitical tensions subside, infrastructure repair and demand recovery are expected to take months, requiring ongoing austerity measures.
