Brazilian airline Gol Linhas Aéreas has announced plans to launch its inaugural transatlantic services, marking a significant milestone for the carrier as it adopts Airbus A330 widebody aircraft for international flights. The airline aims to develop Rio de Janeiro's Galeão International Airport into a major long-haul hub, beginning with routes to Lisbon, Paris, New York, and Orlando in 2026.
The first service will connect Galeão GIG and JFK Manhattan beginning July 8, operating three times per week using aircraft leased from sister airline Wamos Air under an ACMI agreement. Gol is also preparing to introduce its own Airbus A330neos later in the year, expanding its fleet for transoceanic routes. This strategic shift is part of a broader plan to enhance long-distance connectivity across Latin America and beyond.
Gol's Chief Executive, Celso Ferrer, explained that the wider fleet options reduce risk, allowing the airline to deploy different aircraft types within the group. Rio de Janeiro is poised to be central to the airline's international ambitions, with plans to add flights to Lisbon in September and to expand service to other key markets like Paris and Orlando.
The move into long-haul operations marks a departure from Gol's traditional low-cost, narrowbody fleet. The airline previously operated Boeing 767s inherited from Varig but later ceased widebody flying. The new A330 fleet will also bolster cargo operations and support a new business-class product, Insignia by Gol, featuring lie-flat seats and gourmet dining. Additionally, Gol is introducing a top-tier loyalty program segment, Magno, designed to attract premium customers.
Gol’s international expansion is supported by existing code-share agreements with American Airlines, Air France, and TAP Portugal, offering an integrated network for passengers. The airline remains committed to maintaining its low-cost identity while embracing long-distance travel, aiming to serve new markets and strengthen Rio's status as an international aviation hub.
