Bengaluru’s airspace has experienced reports of GPS spoofing, prompting security and aviation authorities to enhance monitoring and safety protocols. The issue was disclosed by the Union civil aviation ministry in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, confirming that Kempegowda International Airport is among several airports facing Global Navigation Satellite System interference. This development highlights a growing aviation safety concern involving satellite-based navigation systems.
The ministry explained that some flights approaching Bengaluru and other major airports have reported GPS spoofing incidents during landings using GPS-based procedures. While contingency measures were followed, and standard navigation aids ensured operational continuity, the situation has raised alarm over potential risks to aircraft navigation during critical phases of flight. The government maintains that layered safety measures, including conventional ground-based systems such as Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), continue to safeguard passengers.
Addressing satellite navigation threats
Aviation experts clarify that GPS spoofing involves broadcasting false satellite signals, which can mislead aircraft navigation systems into displaying incorrect positions, altitudes, or speeds. The reliance on GNSS-based approaches, particularly during low-visibility conditions, makes aircraft vulnerable to such disruptions if security measures are not sufficiently robust. In response, India has issued advisories and standard operating procedures emphasizing real-time reporting of GPS interference and engaging cybersecurity protocols to address broader cyber threats to aviation infrastructure.
The situation underscores the need for resilient navigation and cybersecurity measures at India’s airports, especially at Bengaluru, which is both a major aviation and technology hub. Authorities continue to monitor interference patterns and collaborate with agencies to mitigate risks, ensuring the safety and security of flights amid evolving technological threats.
