In the first half of 2026, Volofin Capital Management achieved a record volume of $500 million in aviation finance transactions, highlighting a significant shift toward alternative lending sources in response to increasing regulatory pressures on traditional banks. As Basel IV regulations tighten, banks have become less inclined to extend secured aircraft loans, creating opportunities for specialized lenders like Volofin and PK Airfinance.

These non-bank financiers have gained traction due to their flexible financing terms and asset-focused approach. Volofin’s recent activity included commitments across 15 loan facilities, such as portfolio financings, engine and aircraft-specific facilities, contributing to a total commitment since inception exceeding $3.35 billion. The company projects reaching $1.25 billion in commitments for the full year, a record level following nearly $1 billion in 2025.

Emergence of New Players and Market Dynamics

Another notable entrant, Merit Airfinance, launched by private investment firm Castlelake, has rapidly expanded since its inception in August 2025, closing or committing approximately $1.3 billion across 11 transactions. These include dealings with leasing companies and airlines, reflecting increased activity in the space.

“We continue our strong momentum, with a record level of transaction activity and a robust pipeline,”

stated Robert Jack, co-CEO of Volofin, on October 5. The growth of these alternative lenders is partly driven by a retreat by European banks, whose domestic regulations have made aircraft-secured lending less attractive. Meanwhile, aircraft lessors are increasingly utilizing pre-delivery payment financing linked to sale and leaseback arrangements, further supporting this trend.

Overall, the shift toward non-bank finance providers signifies a transformation in the aviation financing landscape, emphasizing the need for flexible, asset-based solutions that can adapt to evolving regulatory standards.
