Hong Kong Aero Engine Services (HAESL) has implemented a series of digital transformation initiatives aimed at improving the efficiency and quality of its engine overhaul operations. In 2025, the company overhauled approximately 380 Rolls-Royce engines and 40 Trent 1000 TEN module sets, representing a significant portion of Rolls-Royce’s global maintenance network.

CEO George Edmunds emphasized that while engine overhaul volume remains high, focus is shifting towards work scopes and duration. As engines mature, richer work scopes and longer refurbishment times are expected, resulting in more intensive maintenance cycles.

Digital Enhancements and Future Plans

HAESL is leveraging artificial intelligence and predictive analytics to enhance operational efficiency. Examples include AI-powered borescope inspections, robotic surface inspections to replace manual processes, and digital integration of electronic work cards. These efforts aim to streamline workflows and reduce turnaround times across engine types.

The company is expanding its customer-facing digital platform, the HAECO Customer Gateway, now integrated into HAECO Engine Services in Xiamen. This system provides real-time updates on engine repairs, significantly reducing invoice sign-off times from around a week to one day. A 10-year digital roadmap guides these initiatives, aiming to develop a smart factory with better data insight and operational improvements.

As part of its digital strategy, HAESL is upgrading its enterprise resource planning (ERP) system to SAP S/4HANA, set to go live in March 2027. This transition will centralize data and enable more comprehensive enterprise-wide improvements. Additionally, the company plans to connect its data foundation with HCLTech’s I-MRO/4 asset management system, further boosting maintenance process efficiency.

Overall, HAESL’s initiatives reflect a broader industry trend towards digital transformation, with the goal of reducing maintenance costs, improving turnaround times, and delivering higher-quality services for its airline customers.
