The Honda Aircraft Company has achieved a significant milestone by successfully conducting the first flight of a twin-turbine very light jet entirely powered by Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The test utilized a HondaJet equipped with a blend of hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) synthetic paraffinic kerosene and hydrodeoxygenated synthetic aromatic kerosene.
The aircraft, fitted with the HF120 engine jointly developed by Honda and General Electric, took place over Greensboro, North Carolina, landing at Honda’s headquarters at Piedmont Triad International Airport. This successful flight signals a major step forward in Honda’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions in aviation technology.
HondaJets in service can already operate on up to a 50% SAF blend, but this full SAF-powered flight demonstrates the potential for widespread adoption of sustainable aviation fuels. Honda’s commitment aligns with global efforts to curb aviation emissions and promote environmentally responsible air travel. Industry observers see this achievement as an encouraging development toward industry-wide sustainability initiatives.
Honda’s innovation in green aviation underscores the industry's shift towards eco-friendly solutions, potentially influencing future aircraft design and fuel usage policies. This milestone positions Honda as a leader in sustainable aviation technology, paving the way for cleaner skies and reduced carbon footprints in the airline industry.
