Honeywell is at the forefront of developing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and low-carbon energy solutions, focusing on scalable technologies like its eFining™ process and forming strategic alliances to address key industry challenges such as feedstock limitations and production costs. Industry experts note that the company has led renewable fuels initiatives for over a decade, beginning with the Ecofining™ technology introduced in 2016 for biojet production.

Recently, Honeywell announced a partnership with Verso Energy to deploy its eFining™ technology at multiple facilities across Europe and the United States. This initiative is projected to produce around 200 million gallons of eSAF annually, utilizing abundant feedstocks like captured CO2. Such collaborations exemplify Honeywell’s commitment to expanding alternative fuel pathways that help reduce lifecycle emissions and comply with mandates like the European Union’s ReFuel EU, which aims for substantial eSAF integration by 2050.

Innovative Conversion Processes

Central to Honeywell’s offerings is the eFining™ technology, which converts renewable methanol—synthesized from captured CO2 and green hydrogen—into jet fuel compatible with existing infrastructure. This process not only enables scalable SAF production but also addresses regional constraints on biomass feedstock and helps lower the carbon footprint of aviation fuels. The approach leverages renewable electricity, green hydrogen, and carbon utilization, broadening the pool of feasible supply sources and tackling industry-scale supply challenges.

"Technological innovation combined with policy support and digital solutions is vital for making SAF both scalable and economically sustainable," said Barry Glickman. This sentiment underscores Honeywell’s strategic focus on integrating technology with policy to accelerate the green transition in aviation.

He further emphasized that initiatives like the EU’s ReFuelEU are vital in creating demand certainty and standardization, encouraging investment and technological deployment. Honeywell’s position as a provider of diverse renewable fuel technologies is strategic: its portfolio, including Ecofining, FT Unicracking, and Ethanol to Jet, enables flexibility to meet regional policies, feedstock availability, and economic goals. Glickman concludes that with continued innovation and aligned policies, SAF can become a cornerstone of the aviation industry’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.
