Hong Kong is actively pursuing a reliable and certified supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to uphold its status as an international aviation hub. Stephen Wong Yuen-shan, head of the city’s Policy Unit, highlighted the critical importance of setting clear targets to attract investment and ensure supply during the Sustainable Aviation Futures China Congress. This initiative follows the city’s recent outline of its fuel strategy within its first five-year plan, amid mounting global competition.

Wong pointed out that rising SAF demand is increasingly being driven by policy mandates rather than voluntary actions. Regions such as the European Union, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Japan have introduced mandates and targets, which influence local policy directions. The Hong Kong government is considering similar measures to stay competitive and sustainable in a rapidly changing global aviation environment.

“It is a question of whether Hong Kong can remain an international aviation hub as the economics and rules of global aviation change,” said Stephen Wong Yuen-shan.

The government’s focus on sustainable fuel strategies reflects its aim to adapt to evolving international standards and maintain its connectivity edge. Securing a credible SAF supply aligned with global policies will be essential for the city’s long-term aviation competitiveness and environmental commitments.
