Hong Kong is actively working to enhance its position as a leading global aviation hub. According to recent statements by the city's Financial Secretary, Paul Chan Mo-po, the government is encouraging Cathay Pacific Airways to expand its route network and offer more attractive fares. This effort aims to boost Hong Kong's status as a "superconnector" in international travel.
During the airline's 80th anniversary celebration, Paul emphasized the importance of Cathay Pacific as an ambassador for the city, reaffirming Hong Kong's significance in the global aviation industry. The city's main gateway, Hong Kong International Airport, continues to rank highly worldwide, having been named the fourth-best airport for 2026 by Skytrax.
Current Airport and Airline Performance
In 2025, aviation data provider OAG ranked Hong Kong International Airport as the eighth busiest globally, with 38.7 million seats, trailing Dubai and Singapore Changi airports. Cathay Pacific, recognized as the second-best airline after Qatar Airways in 2026 by AirlineRatings, has set ambitious growth targets, including acquiring 150 new aircraft and expanding its destinations to 150 over the next ten years.
At present, Cathay Pacific operates flights to over 90 destinations across six continents, positioning itself as a vital component of regional and international air travel. These efforts reflect Hong Kong's ongoing strategy to remain competitive in the increasingly crowded global aviation market.
