In a recent speech in Bangkok, IATA Director General Willie Walsh highlighted the need for the Asia-Pacific region to establish its own aviation regulatory and infrastructure frameworks. He emphasized that adopting Europe's approach, which has faced criticism for being overly complex and inflexible, would not serve the region’s ambitious growth plans. Instead, Walsh urged regional stakeholders to craft tailored solutions capable of supporting sustained long-term expansion of air transport.
The Asian-Pacific aviation market is poised for significant growth over the coming decades. Walsh pointed out that to capitalize on this opportunity, policymakers should focus on developing autonomous, adaptable, and region-specific policies. Such strategies would enhance resilience, foster competitiveness, and prevent the mistakes seen in Europe’s regulatory evolution.
He further stated that a focus on infrastructure development, fair regulation, and innovation is crucial. These measures will enable the region to meet increasing passenger and cargo demands without external dependencies compromising growth prospects.
"Asia-Pacific has the potential for significant growth in air transport, but this necessitates developing regional solutions that suit its unique context,"Walsh concluded. His comments underscore the importance of customized policies for fostering a sustainable and prosperous aviation future in the region.
