The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has issued a report emphasizing the substantial economic contributions of aviation in Peru. As Peru hosts its first South American IATA World Cargo Symposium, the 'Value of Air Transport study for Peru' highlights that aviation generated approximately USD 6.2 billion in total economic impact in 2023, representing 3.2% of the country's Gross Domestic Product. This impact includes employment in aviation and related sectors, totaling around 364,000 jobs, along with the movement of 240,300 tonnes of air cargo.
Willie Walsh, IATA's Director General, stated that Peru’s aviation sector plays a crucial role in connecting communities, supporting tourism, and facilitating trade. He called for enhanced collaboration among industry stakeholders and government agencies to expand infrastructure, reduce costs, and streamline regulation.
Recommendations for sustainable growth
IATA advocates for continued investment in infrastructure projects aligned with global standards to maximize economic benefits. The organization also recommends maintaining competitive airport charges, including the elimination of the domestic transfer fee (TUUA), to stimulate investment and route development. Establishing a stable and predictable regulatory environment is crucial for airlines to respond effectively to increasing demand and expand connectivity.
By focusing on these priorities, Peru can bolster its position as a leading regional hub, leveraging aviation to support long-term economic development. The full findings of the study are available for access, supporting further industry discussions and policy development.
