The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is implementing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to support the air cargo industry’s modernization efforts. Among these initiatives, IATA has launched an AI Subject Matter Expert (AI SME), a tool designed to provide operational teams with fast, accurate information from cargo and safety publications, initially covering key reference manuals. This innovation aims to streamline decision-making processes and ensure compliance during critical operations.

Furthermore, IATA has established an Air Cargo AI Excellence Hub to promote collaboration among industry stakeholders, including airlines, ground handlers, freight forwarders, and regulators. The hub seeks to develop best practices, standards, and shared experiences in integrating AI into air cargo workflows. Additionally, efforts are underway to explore AI-driven solutions for real-time interline cooperation, facilitating seamless booking and disruption management across different airline IT systems.

Brendan Sullivan, IATA's Global Head of Cargo, highlighted the significant potential of AI to facilitate the industry’s digital transformation with interoperable, standards-based solutions that improve safety and operational efficiency.

Regional Air Cargo Growth Milestone

In a related development, Bridges Air Cargo has successfully entered the European market with its first Embraer E190F freighter, marking a milestone for the company. The aircraft performed its maiden commercial flight from Cologne, Germany, to Larnaca, Cyprus, carrying express cargo. The airline plans to operate in regions including Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, offering dedicated network solutions that meet the rising demand for express e-commerce deliveries.

"We have developed bespoke handling systems for the E190F and expect this aircraft to significantly enhance our network capabilities," said Guy Bridges, CEO of Bridges Air Cargo.

Embraer’s leadership expressed pride in the milestone, emphasizing their commitment to supporting Bridges’ growth plans. The E190F platform offers notable advantages over older models, including increased capacity, lower operating costs, and suitability for decentralized cargo operations. The ongoing partnership indicates strong industry confidence in the E190F’s role in future air freight development.
