International Air Transport Association (IATA) remains optimistic about Malaysia’s aviation recovery, projecting a positive outlook for 2026 amid regional growth in the Asia-Pacific. Willie Walsh, IATA's Director-General, highlighted that Malaysia benefits from the fast-growing regional air travel market despite a slower recovery in international traffic compared to the global average.
Walsh noted that the current slower pace offers an opportunity for airlines to rebuild capacity and increase demand, especially in air cargo operations driven by expanding e-commerce and shifting supply chains. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to support this growth, forecasted to see revenue passenger kilometer (RPK) growth of 7.2%, with international markets expanding over 11% this year.
He emphasized that the region continues to lead global air traffic recovery through improved connectivity and supportive policy measures, including China’s recent visa-free entry arrangements, which further boost international demand.
Despite global challenges such as supply-chain disruptions and maintenance delays, IATA maintains a positive outlook for Malaysia’s aviation sector in the medium term. Walsh concluded that Malaysia's aviation prospects remain promising, supported by regional demand and cargo prospects, affirming the country's strategic position in the Asia-Pacific air travel landscape.
