ICAO Approves New Regulations Allowing Increased Lithium Battery Carry-On Limits for Passengers

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has announced new regulations permitting passengers to carry up to two portable power banks onboard aircraft, effective March 27, 2026. This decision results from extensive monitoring of lithium battery risks, following incidents involving power banks igniting during flights. The updated specifications allow travelers to include these devices in their carry-on baggage, provided they are not recharged in-flight and are not placed in checked luggage.

Airlines like Lufthansa and T'way Air have implemented strict guidelines to align with the new ICAO standards, prohibiting recharging power banks onboard and specifying storage requirements. For instance, passengers may carry up to five power banks with airline approval, and devices must be kept in their original packaging to minimize fire hazards.

The safety concerns stem from lithium batteries' propensity to explode, catch fire, or leak acid, especially when recharged or improperly stored. Consequently, many airlines remain cautious about lithium battery handling during flights. The ICAO's updated regulation aims to balance security with the convenience of portable charging devices for travelers, ultimately enhancing overall aviation safety.
