India is advancing its efforts to expand and deepen its aviation sector through the development of dedicated pilot training facilities and ecosystem support. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has inaugurated the Orient Flights Aviation Academy at Kurnool Airport in Andhra Pradesh, marking the state’s first organized flight training organization (FTO).
Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu outlined government initiatives to transform Andhra Pradesh into a major aviation hub, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive ecosystem that covers pilot training, aircraft maintenance, ground operations, and airport management. He highlighted the sector’s rapid growth, with the number of airports increasing from 74 in 2014 to over 160, alongside rising aircraft and passenger numbers.
Focus on Pilot Training Capacity
Naidu mentioned that Flight Training Organizations are key to preparing the human resources needed to support India’s expanding aviation industry. He urged for the expansion of FTOs and emphasized the suitability of Kurnool’s weather for pilot training. The academy is encouraged to increase its fleet from three to ten aircraft to meet future demands.
"The Centre is working to extend aviation facilities beyond major cities to rural and remote areas,"
said Ram Mohan Naidu.
He also addressed the projected increase in pilot demand, noting that with airline orders for approximately 1,600 aircraft, over 25,000 pilots might be needed within the next 10 to 15 years. The government aims to provide world-class pilot training within India, reducing reliance on foreign programs.
Recent approvals of 11 new FTOs across India support this expansion, including two in Andhra Pradesh—one in Kadapa and another in Rajamahendravaram. Bhogapuram has also been identified as a promising location for pilot training facilities. The program was attended by various officials, including ministers and airport officials, indicating robust governmental support for the sector’s growth.
This strategic effort aims to meet soaring pilot demand driven by a rising number of aircraft, positioning India as an emerging leader in the global aviation industry.
