India and Russia have formalized a significant logistics support agreement, marking a renewed chapter in their military cooperation. Signed in Moscow on 18 February 2025 and ratified by both nations, the Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Support (RELOS) agreement will enable the structured movement and support of Indian and Russian military assets across each other's bases and airfields.

The pact restores and formalizes interoperability for military aircraft, ships, and ground troops, facilitating operations from Russian Arctic bases to Indian facilities in the Himalayas and Andaman Islands. It simplifies the logistical procedures for refuelling, maintenance, and support, fostering closer integration amid shifting global alliances.

Historically, India’s aviation industry has been deeply tied to Russian aircraft and defense technology, including platforms like the Su-30MKI and MiG-29, supported by over 200 industrial facilities. The new agreement updates this legacy, providing infrastructure to sustain military operations through geopolitical uncertainties for at least another decade.

Official statements highlight the strategic importance of the pact, especially as Russian bases in the Far East and Arctic offer new logistical and operational leverage. It also facilitates joint naval exercises and humanitarian missions, making military logistics more predictable and swift.

This development comes ahead of President Putin’s visit to India in December, emphasizing the enduring importance of the India-Russia strategic partnership. Once the ratification documents are exchanged, both air forces will operate under a modern, reliable framework, reinforcing the mutual relevance of Moscow and New Delhi on the global stage.
