India has announced a substantial investment of approximately $3 billion to significantly expand its aviation infrastructure. This initiative involves the development of 100 new airports and 200 heliports over the next decade, aiming to improve regional connectivity across the country. The program, approved by the cabinet, is part of the UDAN scheme—translating to "Let the common citizen of the country fly"—which has already transformed India's aviation landscape since 2016, adding numerous routes and airports that serve millions of passengers.

The government’s strategic long-term plan envisions increasing the total number of airports from roughly 163 in 2025 to between 350 and 400 by 2047, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s economic vision. This ambitious expansion aims to stimulate regional economies, create employment opportunities, and facilitate sustainable transportation. The funding includes INR 28,840 crore as total budget support and INR 10,043 crore dedicated to viability gap funding to assist airlines.

Expansion and Goals

The upcoming phase emphasizes infrastructure development and aims to establish 200 heliports to improve access to distant and rural areas. The initiative underscores fostering inclusivity by making air travel more accessible to a broader population segment and ensuring the sustainability of transportation routes.

“Since its inception, UDAN has successfully integrated hundreds of routes and airports, transforming India's aviation sector,”

said Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, highlighting the scheme's impact and future potential. The government’s long-term vision strives to leverage air connectivity as a driver of economic development and integration across India's diverse regions.

The growth of India’s aviation market, the highest globally in terms of rate, is expected to support economic growth and employment, despite existing infrastructure and tax-related challenges. The government remains committed to expanding the network to further enable inclusive growth, with plans to reach 350-400 airports by 2047.
