India is reshaping its aviation landscape by developing new airports in key regions to handle increasing passenger traffic. Operational and upcoming airports in regions such as Delhi NCR, Mumbai MMR, and Goa are projected to support around 40 million passengers annually by the end of this year, with further expansion expected to reach approximately 50 million passengers by 2030, according to Crisil Ratings. This growth is driven primarily by pent-up demand and expanding catchment areas at newer airports. Despite the infrastructure development, air traffic growth for the current fiscal year is predicted to be modest, estimated at 0-1%, influenced by recent challenges such as the Air India crash, geopolitical tensions affecting airbase operations with Pakistan, and airline-specific issues. Major investments include AISATS’s $490 million commitment to Noida airport and SriLankan Airlines’ addition of Ahmedabad as its tenth Indian destination. These developments reflect India’s strategic focus on building new alternate airports rather than purely expanding existing facilities, aiming to better accommodate projected passenger demand, which could reach 580 million by 2030. The country’s aviation sector also sees increasing engagement from international tourism initiatives and hotel expansions targeting secondary markets such as Madurai, highlighting a comprehensive approach to boosting connectivity and tourism flows.
