Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu announced that the government has authorized public sector oil marketing companies to implement a partial and staggered increase of 25 percent in jet fuel prices for Indian domestic airlines. This measure aims to shield airlines from a sharp rise in fuel costs caused by global energy disruptions and geopolitical tensions, particularly in West Asia.

The government’s intervention limits the increase in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), which accounts for a significant portion of airline operational expenses, to help maintain sector stability. International routes will still pay the full market rate, as the government has decided against extending relief to foreign carriers operating in India.

Background and Context

The decision is prompted by the recent surge in global energy prices and disruptions in airspace in West Asia, leading to increased fuel costs and longer flight routes. Since ATF prices are deregulated in India and revised monthly, the government’s move provides temporary relief to airlines amid uncertain conditions. Naidu noted that the partial increase will help prevent fare hikes from becoming unmanageable for passengers.

Indian airlines, including IndiGo and SpiceJet, responded favorably to the announcement, emphasizing the importance of government support during this period of volatility. The government clarified that international flights will continue to pay the full price, reflecting a policy stance to protect foreign routes from subsidy or relief measures.

This measure aims to balance the financial sustainability of the airline sector with consumer interests by preventing sudden fare increases, while acknowledging the longer routes and higher operational costs faced by Indian carriers due to regional conflicts. Overall, the policy serves as a pragmatic step to sustain the aviation industry during a challenging global environment.
