India has commenced a major military procurement process by inviting proposals for sixty medium transport aircraft, with a total value estimated at over $10 billion. The Defence Ministry issued the Request for Proposals (RFP) on August 12, 2026, marking the start of a competitive selection involving prominent international aerospace manufacturers.

The program aims to replace India’s aging Soviet-origin Antonov An-32 fleet and fill the mid-tier transport gap. The aircraft must support operations from both large airbases and challenging, high-altitude airstrips in regions such as Ladakh and the northeast. The requirement specifies payload capacities between 18 and 30 tonnes, with the initial aircraft built outside India and subsequent units assembled domestically, aligning with the Make in India policy.

Key contenders include Embraer and Lockheed Martin

The Embraer C-390 Millennium, a jet-powered airlifter carrying approximately 26 tonnes, is a frontrunner, especially given its size and capabilities suited for India’s operational needs. Lockheed Martin’s C-130J Super Hercules, already operated by twelve units, offers proven reliability and an established support network. The contest emphasizes local manufacturing, with at least 40% of the content required to be produced in India, gradually increasing to 60%, including assembly and maintenance, creating a long-term industrial footprint.

“India launches a $10.5 billion competition for 60 Multi-Role Transport Aircraft,” said Aerospace Global News.

This initiative represents a significant opportunity for the winning aircraft manufacturer, not only to secure a substantial order but also to establish a manufacturing hub and a sustained presence in India’s rapidly expanding military aviation sector.
