India is set to expand its regional aviation infrastructure through the UDAN 2.0 scheme, with plans for new airports in Adilabad, Telangana, and Nagarjuna Sagar, Andhra Pradesh. These initiatives aim to upgrade existing airstrips into operational airports, enhancing connectivity in underserved regions. The government has allocated significant funding, including Rs 12,000 crore for airport development and another Rs 10,000 crore as viability gap funding to support airline operations in remote areas.
During the inauguration of the Noida International Airport, Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu outlined these investments and clarified that the government will not take over the Air Force airstrip in Adilabad but will acquire additional land for the new facility. Efforts are also underway to develop other key projects, including the new Bhogapuram Airport and the expansion of Vijayawada Airport, expected to become operational by June. The proposed Mamunoor Airport near Warangal is also progressing, with foundation work anticipated soon.
In addition to infrastructure development, the government is promoting aircraft manufacturing in India. Industry leader Embraer is expected to decide within a few months on establishing a local manufacturing plant, with plans to produce its first India-made aircraft by 2028. These developments are part of India’s broader strategy to boost regional air connectivity and aerospace manufacturing capabilities, supporting economic growth and regional development.
