India's airline industry is facing a critical crisis driven by surging jet fuel prices, which has threatened the operational viability of several carriers. A detailed communique from the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) to the Ministry of Civil Aviation indicates the industry’s deteriorating financial health and the urgent need for government action.

The FIA’s letter highlights that the sharp increase in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, has led to a significant spike in operating costs. International ATF prices have soared by Rs 73 per litre, creating a stark disparity with domestic prices, which increased by only Rs 15 per litre. This discrepancy has rendered both segments unviable, the federation warns.

Carriers such as Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet are particularly impacted, with fuel costs now accounting for 55 to 60 percent of operating expenses—up from 30 to 40 percent previously. Such financial pressure risks leading to operational shutdowns across the sector unless corrective measures are implemented. The industry’s appeal emphasizes the critical need for policy measures to restore parity between domestic and international fuel pricing, securing the future of Indian air travel amid ongoing global energy uncertainties.
