Indian Aviation Sector Faces Severe Crisis Due to Rising Fuel Costs and Economic Challenges

India's aviation industry is currently facing a severe financial crisis driven by soaring fuel prices and global energy market volatility. Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) costs now account for 55-60% of operational expenses, up from 30-40%, severely impacting international routes which have become largely unprofitable. Major carriers such as Air India are reducing international flights, especially to Europe, North America, and Australia, due to unsustainable costs.

While domestic flights have experienced some relief because of government interventions, including capping fuel price increases, the resulting price difference between domestic and international ATF remains a significant challenge. Airlines such as IndiGo and SpiceJet are adjusting fares and fuel surcharges within regulatory limits to manage costs, but profitability remains under pressure, and losses are projected to be significant for FY2026.

The industry’s outlook is further dampened by geopolitical tensions, a declining rupee, and increased expenses associated with longer flight routes. While the government has proposed future measures to promote Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blending on international flights starting in 2027, immediate issues such as high import costs and fuel price volatility require urgent attention. The sector’s recovery depends on regulatory support, energy market stability, and strategic management of operational costs, particularly in a global environment marked by energy price fluctuations.
