Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo is actively pursuing expansion of its fleet with a focus on acquiring more widebody aircraft. Under new leadership led by Willie Walsh, the airline aims to transform into a more global operator amid rising demand in the Indian aviation market.
Despite having ordered hundreds of aircraft, including the Airbus A350, delivery delays and market pressures have underscored the urgency of securing additional widebodies. The airline is currently leveraging short-term leases, notably with Norse Atlantic Airways, to supplement its fleet and bridge the gap until Airbus delivers its first A350s in 2027.
Strategic Fleet Growth
IndiGo’s strategy involves building a long-term widebody backbone, supported by its significant order of the Airbus A350 and potential leased aircraft. These new aircraft will enable point-to-point routes across Europe, North America, and Oceania, opening new markets for the airline.
“The deficit of widebody aircraft means that airlines such as IndiGo are forced to lose market share and face increased competition,”
said Willie Walsh. This fleet expansion is seen as crucial for IndiGo to meet the surging demand and achieve its goal of becoming a truly international carrier.
Alongside new aircraft, IndiGo’s fleet is also driven by orders for the A320neo family jets, including the A321XLR, which support its domestic and regional expansion. As the airline seeks to rectify its current shortfall with widebodies, the upcoming fleet bolsters its capacity to serve global markets efficiently.
