Indian aerospace startup Sarla Aviation has unveiled plans to develop the country’s largest urban air mobility (UAM) factory dedicated to eVTOL aircraft production. The facility, to be situated in Thimmasamudram, Andhra Pradesh, will integrate manufacturing, testing, certification, and maintenance within a single site, marking a first in India. Covering approximately 500 acres, the plant will host production lines for vital components, alongside wind tunnels and extensive testing grounds. The project's initial phase involves an investment of 3.3 billion rupees, with production scheduled to begin in 2029 and a targeted capacity of up to 1,000 aircraft annually. Sarla Aviation has also developed the hybrid-electric Shunya, a six-passenger eVTOL capable of speeds up to 250 kph and ranges up to 800 km. Based in Bengaluru, the company aims to offer affordable flying taxis and emergency air services in major Indian cities, contributing to the growth of urban air mobility in the region.
