India's aviation industry transitions to homegrown CEOs amid expanding airline orders

India's aviation industry is undergoing a significant transition, shifting from primarily expat-led management to more Indian leaders taking the helm of major airlines. This change comes as airlines like IndiGo place historic aircraft orders and expand their global footprint.

Founded in 2005 by Rahul Bhatia and Rakesh Gangwal, IndiGo quickly rose to prominence, making headlines at the Paris Air Show for its ambitious order of 100 planes, later expanding to a total of 830 aircraft through additional orders. The airline made aviation history in 2023 with a record-breaking order of 500 Airbus planes, the largest single purchase agreement in aviation history.

Rakesh Gangwal, a former CEO of US Airways and successor to the low-cost airline model, played a pivotal role in these developments. His strategies, including bulk purchasing discounts and leasing arrangements, helped establish IndiGo's low-cost success. Gangwal's departure from IndiGo in 2022 marked the end of an era, yet his influence exemplifies the increasing prominence of Indian leadership in the aviation sector.

Globally, Indians have held significant leadership roles—such as Ronojoy Dutta at United Airlines and Nikhil Ravishankar at Air New Zealand—highlighting the trend of Indian executives in top international airlines. Meanwhile, in India, the leadership landscape has traditionally favored expatriates, partly due to historical factors from the nationalization era.

Recent internal discussions suggest a government inclination to appoint more Indian nationals as airline CEOs, aiming to enhance public connection and market responsiveness. The recent resignation of Pieter Elbers from IndiGo, following operational issues, underscores the importance placed on leadership ability over nationality.
