The Indian aviation industry is experiencing notable growth, with traffic increasing by 32% since 2020, supported by over 1,500 aircraft orders and expanding infrastructure. According to Willie Walsh, Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), India possesses the necessary ingredients to become a dominant global market, despite facing some temporary issues.

Walsh highlighted that India's domestic market has grown significantly in terms of revenue passenger kilometres, underscoring the country's strong demand and potential. He also noted that ongoing challenges, such as disruptions experienced by airlines like IndiGo, are likely to be short-lived as the market continues to expand and open to new entrants facilitated by increasing airport capacity.

Several Indian carriers have experienced growth and setbacks over the years, with prominent examples like Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines. Walsh emphasized that the privatisation of Air India, which was acquired by Tata in January 2022, is a positive step towards improving the airline's commercial environment and overall industry health.

He further explained that the Indian market's duopolistic structure, dominated by IndiGo and the Air India Group, is expected to evolve with increased airport capacity and new airline entrants. Overall, Walsh sees India as one of the most exciting opportunities for global aviation growth, with the country poised for a robust future.
