India's domestic air travel market has experienced considerable growth, with over 1,992 lakh passengers traveling in 2024-25, reflecting an increasing accessibility fueled by the expansion of airports and privatization of the sector. While private airlines like IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and Akasa have driven this growth, recent market developments reveal a significant consolidation, resulting in a duopoly dominated by IndiGo and the Tata Group’s airlines.

This market concentration has elevated fares on key routes, with IndiGo’s market share reaching 65 percent and fares increasing notably, raising concerns about the impact on consumers and the competitive landscape. The collapse of GoFirst Airlines and the declining share of SpiceJet exemplify the challenges in maintaining healthy competition, especially following regulatory scrutiny and operational disruptions.

Experts advocate for comprehensive reforms to foster fair competition, including enforcing equal compliance with regulations, simplifying licensing processes for new entrants such as Al Hind Air, FlyExpress, and Shankh Air, and rationalizing airport charges and air traffic rights. These measures aim to prevent monopolization, lower fares, and ensure safety standards are upheld across the industry.

Government action is deemed critical to diversify the market, promote regional connectivity through schemes like UDAN, and implement policies that prevent predatory pricing and abuse of dominance. Strengthening these frameworks will help sustain India’s position as a fast-growing aviation hub while safeguarding passenger interests.
