India's aviation industry has faced over 1,200 technical issues in the past three years, highlighting ongoing safety concerns despite efforts to strengthen regulatory oversight. Data shared in the Rajya Sabha shows a gradual decline in incidents from 470 in 2023 to 353 in 2025, but the numbers still point to systemic operational challenges for major carriers such as IndiGo and Air India.
Officials indicate that these technical snags often relate to fleet maintenance and operational efficiency, with carriers like SpiceJet and Akasa Air experiencing fluctuating incident rates. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has implemented comprehensive measures, including regular audits, ramp inspections, and night surveillance, to ensure adherence to strict airworthiness standards.
One significant technological development is the adoption of the ‘Track the Tail’ system on the eGCA platform, which facilitates real-time monitoring of aircraft health and components. Such tools aim to identify potential issues early, preventing escalation into safety incidents.
Beyond scheduled airlines, private aviation has also come under increased scrutiny following 17 reported accidents in recent years. Regulators are intensifying oversight across the industry to maintain safety standards as the sector continues its rapid expansion.
