The debate over soaring airfares in India has prompted the Civil Aviation Minister to reaffirm the government's support for deregulation policies, highlighting their importance in fostering industry growth and market competition. During a parliamentary session, Minister K Rammohan Naidu addressed concerns raised by opposition members regarding the recent rise in ticket prices, explaining that the government's capacity to impose fare caps is limited to extraordinary circumstances. He emphasized that maintaining deregulation encourages new entrants and sustains sector expansion.

Naidu acknowledged the aircraft availability crisis faced by Indian carriers, with over seventeen hundred aircraft on order but delayed deliveries due to global supply chain disruptions. As part of an initiative to bolster domestic production, India is engaging with Russian manufacturers Sukhoi and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to develop regional aircraft domestically. This strategic move aims to reduce dependency on imported aircraft and address capacity constraints.

Opposition voices criticized the rising ticket prices, citing examples where fares have increased substantially, and accused airlines of monopolistic tendencies. In response, Naidu mentioned ongoing pilot schemes offering fixed airfares through alliances like Alliance Air, with plans to extend similar initiatives to private carriers. The government’s focus remains on balancing deregulation with passenger protection, fostering an environment conducive to airline growth while ensuring accessibility for travelers.

This approach underscores India’s broader aviation strategy to strengthen self-reliance, address supply chain issues, and enhance consumer experiences, all within a framework that encourages healthy market competition.
