India’s civil aviation sector is facing unprecedented disruptions, with IndiGo airline canceling over 1,000 domestic flights causing widespread traveler inconvenience. The cancellation surge, primarily affecting flights from Delhi and Bengaluru airports, has been linked to issues with crew management and recent regulatory adjustments by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The Civil Aviation Ministry has intervened by granting IndiGo a temporary relaxation from new flight duty time limitation (FDTL) regulations to mitigate delays and congestion at major airports. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu emphasized ongoing steps to investigate the disruptions, stressing accountability for responsible parties.

IndiGo’s CEO Peter Elbers expressed regret over the situation and assured passengers that normal operations are expected to resume between December 10 and 15. The airline’s substantial market share, nearly 70%, has raised concerns of a monopoly, with some critics worrying about the long-term implications.

The DGCA attributed the flight disruptions to misjudgments and planning gaps by IndiGo regarding pilot scheduling and duty hours. While the exemption from stricter nighttime duty regulations aims to stabilize services, it has faced criticism from safety advocates such as the Airlines’ Pilots Association of India, citing potential safety risks.

Passengers across the country have experienced significant hardship, with some reporting unreachable customer care and increase in fares on alternative carriers. Incidents shared from Odisha and other states reflect broader frustration, with stranded travelers unable to obtain clear flight updates or assistance. The government has announced plans for investigations and enforcement of accountability to prevent future occurrences.
